A hairstyle on a film set has to last a dozen or so hours, and a high ponytail has saved my day more than once. On one condition: it can't be flat, because a limp ponytail looks worse than hair worn down. This is Anna Nowak-Ibisz, co-founder of SkinVibe. PonyGadget is our smallest product and the only one that doesn't need electricity - and on its page I signed it with the word "Polecam!" ("I recommend it!") with a clear conscience. Today I'll tell you why: how it works, how to put it in step by step and how to choose the size and color so that it disappears in your hair.

IN SHORT

  • PonyGadget is a small accessory made of anti-static nylon (it weighs 6 grams) that you place between two sections of hair at the base of your ponytail - it lifts the hairstyle from the inside and adds volume in a few seconds.
  • It works mechanically: no backcombing, no hairspray and no heat. You take it out in the evening and the style leaves no trace on your hair.
  • Fine and limp hair gains the most. The Standard size is for normal and fine hair, Large for thick, very dense hair and extensions.
  • You match the three colors (cream, brown, black) to the shade of your hair at the roots - once in place, the gadget should be completely invisible.
  • Important when buying: PonyGadget is a hygiene product, so it can only be returned in an unopened package. Choose the size before you open the box.

What is SkinVibe PonyGadget and who is it for?

SkinVibe PonyGadget is a small cylinder made of anti-static nylon, molded in one piece - with no glued parts or joints that could catch your hair. It weighs 6 grams, less than a regular hair clip, and once in place you can't feel it. You put it in at the base of your ponytail, and it works like an invisible scaffold: it lifts the updo from the inside and keeps it up all day, instead of letting it drop under its own weight.

Who does this little thing change the most for? We designed it with three problems in mind that I know from countless conversations with you: fine hair, flat roots and a ponytail with no volume. If your hair is delicate and "always flat", if your ponytail lies flat against your head after an hour - that is exactly the situation in which PonyGadget shows what it can do. Women with thick, dense hair have their reason too: a heavy updo drops the fastest, and solid support from the inside holds it in place.

SkinVibe graphic: the problems of fine hair, flat roots and a ponytail with no volume, and the solution - a woman with a ponytail lifted thanks to PonyGadget

I use it for work, for workouts and for big nights out - this accessory knows no division between everyday life and special occasions. And since it needs no electricity, heat or styling products, it's also the simplest item in our entire range. SkinVibe won the title of Women's Brand of the Year 2025, and I like to think it was for exactly this approach: technology where it makes sense, simplicity where it's enough. For the same reason it often lands on my list of small gifts; I've put together the full list of ideas for a gift for a teenage girl separately. I have similar lists for those looking for a gift for a sister or a gift for a wife.

How to add volume to a ponytail without backcombing?

You can build ponytail volume in several ways, and most of them come at a price. Backcombing lifts hair instantly, but done regularly it weakens and tangles it - and brushing out backcombed hair in the evening is a moment I wouldn't wish on any of you. Hairsprays and mousses add lift, except that they quickly weigh fine hair down and the result can be the opposite of what you wanted. There is also technique at the drying stage - I've written a separate guide about drying with your head upside down and directing the airflow at the roots, how to dry your hair properly - but the effect of drying also drops over time, especially with delicate hair.

PonyGadget solves this differently, because it works mechanically. It doesn't change the hair structure, doesn't glue anything together and doesn't heat anything - it simply lifts the updo physically from the inside. In practice this means three things: the effect is instant, it lasts until you let your hair down and disappears without a trace when you take the gadget out in the evening. Your hair stays healthy, detangled and ready for the next day.

For me, this is exactly the difference between a trick and a tool. A trick has to be repeated and fixed during the day. A tool you put in once - and forget about it.

How to use PonyGadget step by step?

I describe the whole procedure exactly as in the instructions you'll find in the box. The first time it took me maybe a minute, now I do it in a few seconds - it really is a matter of one try in front of the mirror.

  1. Put PonyGadget on your finger - your hair should be thoroughly detangled beforehand.
  2. Divide the hair at the back of your head into two parts: upper and lower.
  3. Place PonyGadget between the two sections of hair, with the opening facing the roots.
  4. Tie both sections of hair into a ponytail, wrapping the hair tie around PonyGadget.
  5. Spread the strands so that your hair covers it completely - in the final hairstyle it should be invisible.
  6. Done: your ponytail or bun gains volume and clearly lifts up.

After you click, YouTube (Google) plays the video.

If you prefer a bun, after step four wrap the ponytail around the hair tie and secure it with bobby pins - a base built on PonyGadget holds its shape much more securely than a hair tie alone. And when you want a more relaxed look, gently pull out individual strands at the roots: the hairstyle becomes looser, and the lift stays.

Size and color: how to match PonyGadget to your hair?

Choosing the size is the most important decision when buying, which is why I'm giving it a moment of its own. PonyGadget comes in two sizes. Choose Standard (2.5 × 2.5 cm) for normal, fine and very fine hair - it's the option for most of you. Large (about 3 × 4 cm) was made for thick, very dense hair and hairstyles with extensions: the larger surface gives heavy hair stronger support.

Choosing the color is simple: match it to the shade of your hair at the roots, because that's where the gadget works. Cream for blonde and light strands, brown for brunettes and copper shades, black for dark hair. When put in correctly it should be fully covered anyway, but a matching color gives you the certainty that nothing will "flash" from under your hairstyle, even in the wind.

In the box, besides the gadget itself, you'll find six strong, elastic hair ties (70% polyamide, 30% elastane) that don't slip off your hair - color-matched to the chosen variant. That matters, because in this hairstyle the hair tie works the hardest: it wraps around PonyGadget and holds the whole structure together.

And one thing I want to tell you straight before you click "buy": PonyGadget is a hygiene product in direct contact with skin and hair, which is why it can't be resold once opened. A return within 30 days is only possible in the original, unopened package - for product defects you of course have a 2-year warranty. In practice: think through the size and color before unpacking, and if you have doubts, write to us before you buy - we'll help you choose.

The ponytail is only half the story, because volume starts at the drying stage. If you want to build a whole routine, take a look at our hair dryer collection - and let PonyGadget be the final, fastest touch. Big effects love small tools. 🤍

Frequently asked questions about PonyGadget

How does PonyGadget work?

PonyGadget is a light cylinder made of anti-static nylon that you place between two sections of hair at the base of a ponytail or bun. It works mechanically: it lifts the updo from the inside and doesn't let it drop under its own weight. It needs no heat, hairspray or backcombing, and after you take it out it leaves no trace on your hair.

Can you see PonyGadget in your hair?

Not when it's put in correctly - the upper section of hair covers it completely, and the hairstyle looks natural. Choosing the right color helps: cream for light hair, brown for brunettes, black for dark hair. Match the color to the shade of your hair at the roots, because that's where the gadget sits.

Which PonyGadget size should I choose for fine hair?

The Standard size (2.5 × 2.5 cm) is designed for fine, very fine and normal hair. Choose the Large size (about 3 × 4 cm) only for thick, very dense hair or extensions - with fine hair, the smaller option is easier to cover completely, and the lift will be clear anyway.

Does PonyGadget work for a bun too?

Yes. You set up the base exactly as for a ponytail, then wrap your hair around the hair tie and secure it with bobby pins. A bun built on PonyGadget has more volume and holds its shape more securely all day, because it's supported from the inside by a stable, light structure instead of a hair tie alone.

Does PonyGadget pull or weigh down your hair?

No - and that was one of the most important things when we designed it. It weighs 6 grams, is molded in one piece with no joints that could catch strands, doesn't pull your hair or press on it, and your scalp can breathe freely. It's an alternative to backcombing, which weakens the hair structure when repeated regularly.

Can I return PonyGadget after opening the package?

No - PonyGadget is a hygiene product in direct contact with skin and hair, which is why it can't be resold once opened. A return within 30 days of purchase is only possible in the original, unopened package. A 2-year warranty covers product defects, regardless of whether the package has been opened.
